What makes that easier is another reform that has spread from Canada to hundreds of U.S. schools: 4 x 4, or block, scheduling. Instead of students' rushing from one 50-minute period to another six times daily, work is divided into four periods of 85 minutes each; a year's worth of each subject is covered in a semester. Teachers see fewer students each term and get to know them better. A lecture, a discussion and a hands-on project can take place all in one period.
