...Either way it hurts," said one party elder last week, summing up the "Jackson problem" confronting the Democrats. "Down one path we have to turn our backs on everything this party has purported to stand for--and on our most loyal voting bloc. Down the other, we face certain disaster in the fall...

Political sciencists couldn't have come up with a more perfect exercise in the use of military coercion. The territory of our treaty ally was invaded by her expansionist Soviet-bloc neighbor; the United States sent in troops as a warning that a deeper invasion would provoke the retaliation of our forces; the enemy withdrew without reaching its objective that threatened American national interest. It would all have been perfect, except for meddling by the Democratic congressmen who invited Managua to enjoy its Spring Break in Honduras...

"Older audiences," Ganis says, "now know it's safe...

...triumph. Then came the scores and the boos. Thomas' marks for technical merit were high, but her grades for artistic presentation were much lower than those for Katarina Witt. Alex McGowan, Thomas' coach, held his nose in disgust. Later, McGowan seemed to accuse the three judges from East bloc countries -- Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union and Witt's native East Germany -- of protecting Thomas' rival. "We don't want this political nonsense," he said. "We just want the best skater...
