Action. Science fiction. Graphic-novel source. Bruce Willis. That was supposed to be a recipe for minting money. Yet Surrogates, with Willis in a dual role as a futurist FBI agent and his platinum-blond servo, fizzled, while the 3-D animated feature Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs sizzled. The Sony cartoon pulled in $24.6 million to win the box-office weekend, according to early official studio estimates. Other segments of the potential audience may have renounced moviegoing - attending to more manly pursuits like watching football games and begging God's forgiveness - but moms and their kids went...
...clear-blue-eyed 19-year-old with a blond ponytail, Ben Alexander of Iowa City, tramps along a mossy trail, pops into a chicken coop he recently helped build and grins while clambering up a swinging bridge to a counseling room in a treehouse. This is therapy a la Swiss Family Robinson...
...Greer, a grizzled, bearded depressive (his son has recently died in a car accident, the victim of lazy screenwriters), and his nearly unstoppable surrogate, who lives out the career as an FBI agent that Greer used to do himself. But the spectacle won't lure enough customers to make Surrogates a big-money winner...

In the folk boom of the 1960s, no group had more success than Peter, Paul and Mary, in part because of their dramatic look: two serious gents in jackets and matching goatees and, between them, a strong-featured young woman with long blond hair in bangs and a supple, powerful voice. That was Mary Travers, who died Sept. 16 at 72 in Danbury, Conn., after a long bout with leukemia...
...black women, hair has classification power (witness the connection Don Imus made between hair and sexual promiscuity when he referred to the Rutgers women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos"). Just as blond has implicit associations with sex appeal and smarts (or lack thereof), black-hair descriptors convey thick layers of meaning but are even more loaded. From long and straight to short and kinky - and, of course, good and bad - these terms become shorthand for desirability, worthiness and even worldview.
