...tense early-morning hours of June 4, hope died and fear was born. Thousands of combat troops stormed Tiananmen Square, transforming the Woodstock-like encampment of young students calling for democracy into the bloodiest killing ground in Communist China's history. The images of defiance and devastation, the voices of determination and despair, shook the world. Here, protesters attacked troops with poles and rocks. There, a student lurched, his dazed face soaked with blood. Everywhere, the bodies fell, how many is still not known, while fires blazed, signaling the dawn of China's uncertain new world...

That touched off one of the bloodiest incidents since Palestinians began their intifadeh in December 1987. Villagers said their tempers had flared earlier in the week when Jewish settlers uprooted trees in the area and Israeli soldiers patrolling the rural village shouted obscenities at local women. Nearly 90% of the violence involves stones, and most of the throwers are children. Strikes to protest the surge in deaths led only to more lethal encounters with Israeli troops...

...suggestive scenes of bondage and other kinky sex. Geraldo Rivera put a few noses out of joint with his grisly NBC special on satanic cults. Male strippers flaunted their pecs and pelvises in the ABC movie Ladykillers, while NBC's The F.B.I. Murders culminated in perhaps the longest and bloodiest shoot-out in TV history. Even the classy ABC mini-series War and Remembrance turned off some viewers with its graphic scenes of Nazi atrocities...
