Consumer confidence is in full bloom. The University of Michigan's autumn survey of public attitudes measured the highest level of optimism about the economy since 1972. A prime reason is the fall in unemployment. Some 3.5 million more Americans have jobs this Christmas than last, and people are less concerned about losing employment.
