...After four hours of trawling, the mission is all but accomplished. The spoils: a black leather blouson jacket from M. Bogen & Sons of Boston (asking price: 2,000 baht, or $49; final purchase price: 1,200 baht); a pair of olive-green U.S. Army cotton fatigues (700 baht, bargained down to 400); a pair of well-worn Levi's 501s (800 baht, down to 650); a "Made in Hawaii" rayon aloha shirt with coconut-shell buttons (1,000 baht, down to 700); a Lee denim jacket (600 baht, down to 400); a black canvas belt?very Helmut Lang (fixed price...

...Dior, Gucci and Stella McCartney are the flip side of the miniskirt trend. Dior and Gucci have been pushing this new, billowing silhouette for several seasons, but it's new for Stella McCartney, who showed the best collection of her short career at her own label. If a ballooning blouson jacket in crocodile seems a bit too much, a floaty top like McCartney's - matched with lean jeans, not a tight mini - is an easier way to wear the new look. Montana may make...

Spotted on campus during the recent Junior Parents' Weekend, were a plethora of preppy classics, from crewneck sweaters over jeans and corduroys to Brooks Brothers and J. Press sports jackets and rep ties. Sparking the classic mix: blouson or jean jackets, retro-looking ski sweaters, and the very occasional flash of miniskirt-bared legs. Adding their own ineffable brand of casual chic were a group of French students touring Harvard, wearing the born-again preppie garb which, ironically, is also the latest rage in Paris...

Catastrophe. Not the designs-there was a general consensus that they were excellent. Laura Biagiotti came up with not only a trim pants-skirt and navy blouson but also a knit pullover colored wine red and gold, the official city colors. The policewomen were enthusiastic, the press enchanted. Gucci created a leather blouson and helmet that looked as if it belonged on a Flash Gordon storm trooper. The Fendi sisters, working as usual with Karl Lagerfeld, went far afield from their luxury furs and submitted a striking winter woolen overcoat with a storm cape that the Brontë sisters might...
