Peter Lubin indicates that he's a precocious graduate student in Comparative Literature by his parody of the "fictions" of Jorge Luis Borges. His title, "A Vindication of Ephraim Blueprint," echoes Borges' "An Examination of Herbert Quain." Lubin comes close to sustaining the self-conscious tone of pseudo-pedantry which gives Borges' work its peculiar charm. But the difficulty of parodying a parodist is evident in the moments when the piece descends into nonsense and uncomfortable undergraduate humor. Although seemingly sympathetic, the parody uses the penetrating method of Borges' own arcane inventiveness to become the closest thing to unfavorable comment...
...formulated in 1839, states that all living matter is composed of cells, which are made up of nuclei and cytoplasm. In the last two decades scientists have found that DNA, a long double--chained molecule found in the nucleus, carries the cell's genetic information. This information is the blueprint that describes how the working parts of the cell, the proteins, should be assembled from 20 building blocks, the amino acids. Thus DNA ultimately determines the cell's function. The DNA's information is transferred to RNA (the cell's working manual), which is chemically like DNA except that...
...bombing has not prevented the DLD from doing some long-range planning and construction. While crisis solidifies its war-time authority, the DLD has been quietly laying the foundations for North Vietnam's post-war society. Surprisingly, its blueprint does not involve a tightening of central reigns. In the past three years, Ho Chi Minh has steadily decentralized almost every aspect of North Vietnamese life, scattering industry and schools throughout the caves, jungles, and villages of the North's back-country. Limited decision-making power is sifting down to local cadre...
...with Impurities. Taking natural DNA from a simple virus called Phi X 174 (which consists only of a DNA molecule surrounded by a protein sheath), they added it to the brew as a template, or blueprint, to guide the assembly of the synthetic molecule. Under the influence of the DNA polymerase enzyme, the four basic nucleotides aligned themselves in codelike combinations alongside the natural DNA molecule. Eventually they formed a strand consisting of about 6,000 nucleotide units that was a mirror image of the corresponding strand in the natural molecule. Then, using their mirror-image molecule as a template...
Verses & Wine. This feeling made a Utopian socialist of him. He influenced generations of obscure idealists throughout the world who read his News from Nowhere, a palimpsest of nonexistent felicities, as if it were a blueprint for the future. The illogic inherent in the notion that an infatuation with wimples, rood screens and the music of madrigals played on hautboys should give him title to prescribe for future generations seldom troubled Morris. If it had, he could not have led a life of such vigor and achievement...
