There is, I think no single blueprint by which to overcome black students' isolation from success-oriented relationships at white colleges. Any such blueprint, moreover, would be unacceptable, because it would involve a herd-like strategy of response to the problem, lacking imagination and spontaneity. The best way out of the thumb-sucking ethnic cul-desac tht characterizes a major sector of black students here and elsewhere should involve each student defining his or her own cosmopolitan or transcultural strategy on white campuses. Innovation and uniqueness of response should be the hallmark of a new era of transcrultural behavior...
...Washington, when U.S. policymakers look at the same map, they do not see a Kremlin blueprint taking form, but they are nonetheless deeply concerned. They can imagine a "Finlandized" or neutralized Turkey, a Sovietized Afghanistan, a Balkanized Pakistan and an Iran in some still unpredictable state of disarray. Politically tenuous and strategically crucial, this band of non-Arab Islamic countries stretches from the Bosporus in the west to the Hindu Kush in the east?nearly 3,000 miles of buffer between Russia and the warm waters of the Mediterranean, the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea. It is potentially...
Some human beings are gifted with perfect pitch, others with total recall. Ben Skora can hand-build just about anything, without benefit of blueprint. A high school dropout, one-time recording company owner, Skora has for the past 30 years helped pay the rent by treating drug, drinking and other behavioral problem cases with hypnosis. But he admits to a life-long addiction of his own: gadgets. One historic day six years ago, he repaired to his garage with an armload of automobile power-window assemblies and second-hand refrigerator motors worth about $2,000 at the junkyard. Three years...
Ahtisaari faces more than psychological roadblocks. By the end of August he is supposed to submit to U.N. Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim a plan for a truce between the guerrillas and South African troops, as well as a blueprint for the election of a constituent assembly that will draft a constitution for independent Namibia. Pretoria has warned that it may reject any recommendation Ahtisaari comes up with. Meanwhile both sides have adopted a "you first" attitude that will make a cease-fire difficult to achieve. As guerrillas under his command blew up a vital water line in northern Namibia, SWAPO...
...following plan presumably is not acceptable to either side right away, although that does not mean it is ultimately unfeasible. No blueprint can or should be imposed in a single, dramatic act. Instead, it ought to proceed by stages, with each new step contingent upon fulfillment of the conditions required by the previous steps. This process might take years, even decades. The end result, however, could well be a new Palestinian state that could serve as a bridge between Israel and the rest of the Arab world...
