Quicker than a hornet could buzz, Douglas' fellow liberal Democrats, including Minnesota's Hubert Humphrey and Oregon's Richard Neuberger, deserted him. "Let me be blunt about the matter, and say that I am not sure which quarter the President would postpone," Humphrey said plaintively. He read off a list of Minnesota projects, then added: "They are a part of a quarter that I do not want the President to touch." With equal candor, Neuberger admitted: "On this bill I happen to be 'stuck,' . . . God Almighty put a great deal of water [in Oregon...

Britain's new Prime Minister Harold Macmillan prides himself on being a blunt man, and he was blunt when he addressed a Conservative Party political rally at Leicester last week. Said he: "There is no difference between Socialism and Communism, except this: Socialism is soft, Communism is hard; Socialism is pink, Communism is red. Socialism gets you down bit by bit by a kind of anesthetic process. It might be called mercy killing. Communism just knocks you in the head...

Argentina, according to the minister's figures, is consuming and featherbedding its way to 'bankruptcy...

Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr in virtually the only two roles give very competent performances; this is a particular accomplishment for Mitchum. His Mr. Allison is a "big dumb guy," whose blunt confidence in his powers is tempered by unexpected flashes of real insight. Deborah Kerr plays Sister Anglea with naivete and a brouge, but without cruelty. Both could have been unmerciful satires of arch-type young nuns and dirty Marines; but Houston has made them happily sympathetic figures, and not pressed indelicate comparison...
