What was that like, when you realized that people were taking your idea and running with it? At first there was a false blush of inventor's pride. But the more it started to spread, the more I realized that I hadn't invented anything at all. I had "invented" this really simple way for people to disrupt the flow of the city that they lived in. I had no ownership at all for what they were doing. The funny experience was, after a while, once it started spreading beyond anything I could imagine, I actually felt like as much...
...wasn't the size of the U.S. budget deficits - or how much Treasury debt China now buys - that made Tim Geithner blush in Beijing this morning. During his maiden visit to China as U.S. Treasury Secretary, Geithner visited Peking University to give a speech and answer a series of probing questions from students. The school - "Beida," as the Chinese call it - is probably the country's premier university, and in 1981, after his sophomore year at Dartmouth, Geithner did an eight-week program in Mandarin there. After his speech today, one of his old teachers produced a photo of Geithner...
...first blush, receiving a generous stipend - sometimes as much as $75,000 - to do whatever your heart desires might not sound so bad. But for young lawyers facing upwards of $200,000 in law school debt, the outlook is less rosy. For starters, there's the very real possibility that that the deferred job may never materialize - nearly 5,000 veteran attorneys have been laid-off since last September, according to industry website Lawshucks.com. "I'd love to take the money and go backpack around Thailand," says David Kirchblum, who graduates from Boston College's law school next week...
There is, at first blush, no good reason for this. There is nothing unique or distinctive about The Mentalist (which is not to say that it's a bad show - more about that in a minute). There's no cutting-edge science, no fancy camera work, no how-did-they-think-of-that hook. Every week, Jane goes out, talks to people, observes details and solves uncomplicated cases the same way Columbo did 35 years ago. We've seen this a million times before on television...
What does not make sense, at least at first blush, is that the financial results of all of the other major handset companies from Sony Ericsson to Nokia (NOK) to Motorola (MOT) were down. These firms can hardly give handsets away, much less sell them. Each of these operations said that global cell phone unit sales will be down in 2009. What is even more puzzling is that large handset companies don't just make smart phones; they make a lot of cheap phones for people in emerging markets and consumers who don't want a handset that acts...
