Allegiance to the Theatergoer. A reporter at heart, he has always felt a stronger allegiance to the theatergoer than to the theater. A man of many interests, he has published seven books, mostly collections of casual, contemplative essays, is a chronic bird watcher and boat watcher, a part-time farmer (he owns 153 acres in Durham, N.Y.), and an amateur woodworker. When World War II broke out, he insisted that the Times send him abroad as a correspondent, spent two years in China, followed that up with a ten-month reportorial stint in Moscow that won him a Pulitzer Prize...

...girl's arm, tenderly outstretched toward the skindiver. Koerner had in mind the sort of arduous wooing found in fairy tales, where the king sets a series of tasks for the princess' suitor. In this case, Koerner says, the king may be the lifeguard in the boat, and he may have flung a ring into the water for the youth to retrieve. Delfino became intrigued by the possibilities of Down Under livestock in 1957, made a deal with the New Zealand government to ship 1,500 steers to the U.S. He chartered an old coal-burning British banana boat with a Panamanian registry, a Filipino captain, Australian officers, Chinese crewmen and Indian and Filipino herdsmen to handle the cattle. But he was in trouble before he cleared port...

...landed in San Diego, minus 107 cattle and one crew member who had died on the way. There he was greeted by the A.S.P.C.A., U.S. Bureau of Customs, and the Public Health Service. The Chinese crewmen were confined to ship, and they refused to unload the cattle from the boat, which by that time was two feet deep in month-old manure. Delfino, one of his partners, Clarence Peavy, and their employees pitched in and got the cattle off the boat. In all, Delfino lost about $30,000 on the first trip. "But it was well worth it," says...

...downright disdain. Instead of turning over its programing to packagers, CBC puts together its own schedule, then sells ads under the same conditions as newspapers and magazines, confining commercials to seven minutes an hour. It pipes in some U.S. network shows (Hallmark Hall of Fame, Ed Sullivan Show, River boat) that blend suitably with its schedule, selling the advertising time to Canadian firms. CBS produces almost all the rest of its shows, and with two exceptions-Ford Startime (half of its programs are imported, half produced for Ford of Canada by CBC) and the CBC-produced General Motors Presents...
