...scruples!" The Simbas (Swahili for "lions") of Rebel General Nicholas Olenga did their best to carry out the order. In the Avenue Sergeant Kitele, according to some survivors, the command to fire was given by "Major Bubu," a deaf-mute ex-boxer addicted to hemp who served as personal bodyguard to Rebel Defense Minister Gaston Soumialot. Bubu's order could not have been a scream, but in its strangled, inarticulate ferocity must have expressed precisely the blood lust of the Simbas...

...refreshing interpretation and Karlen's convincing performance is sustained by a mature troupe of supporting players. Barbara Colby is uncannily believable as Caligula's almost worn out but vapidly feminine mistress, and Jerome Raphel appears as strong, conscious and submissive as one could hope Caligula's ex-slave bodyguard to be. Only Joseph Hindy, who plays Caligula's naive, sensitive and ultimately rejected friend, Scipio, seems out of place on this fine stage. With a Vietnamese plainclothes bodyguard, he climbs into the back seat of a Checker Marathon sedan. The car rolls past barbed-wire stanchions, stops 15 minutes later in front of the ugly U.S. Embassy building at 39 Ham Nghi Boulevard. There, barricades block sidewalk passersby, while barbed wire funnels visitors past South Vietnamese soldiers into a lobby guarded by U.S. Marines...

...near Bologna at which they created the Second Roman Triumvirate, the meeting of the three little men under a tent on Laos' Plain of Jars certainly rivaled it in security precautions.* Amid fluttering truce flags, the only outsiders allowed within 100 meters of the tent were one unarmed bodyguard for each principal, and two servants. Between 100 and 300 meters away were stationed ten unarmed guards for each side, and in an outer circle stood 330 more soldiers...
