...convicted on Abscam charges, Williams faces a barrage of electronic evidence in the form of video and audio tapes of his encounters with undercover FBI agents. But in Williams' case, a figure mentioned but never before seen in Abscam tapes makes a dramatic appearance: "Sheik" Yassir Habib, a bogus Arab millionaire portrayed by Agent Richard Farhart, outfitted in dark glasses and kafiiyeh and grunting in imitation broken English...
...would "with great pleasure talk to the President of the United States about [the mining contracts] and in a personal way get him as enthusiastic and excited." McDonald also quoted from tapes showing Williams pledging to "do everything in my power" to arrange permanent U.S. residency papers for the bogus Sheik Habib...
...counterfeit currencies began appearing in local retail stores and restaurants-at least 36 fake bills were spent in all-somebody called the cops. When Smith later started making large withdrawals, he attracted no notice. After all, he was a lord of the boxing rings and regularly paid fighters six-figure purses. Three weeks ago, however, the ruse unraveled...
...what one suspects is the only amplifier in the Brazilian backlands. Diegues subtly uses Wilker's ridiculously inept shamming to represent more seriously the modern demand to sell out and adapt. One of the blackest jokes in the movie occurs when Lord Gypsy annoints his draught-plagued audience with bogus snow to the crooning of "White Christmas;" Gypsy proclaims "I can make it snow in Brazil like it does in all civilized countries." His ironic tone suggested he knows what it takes to get ahead in that world...
