...like a declaration of war, and as if on cue, the harassment surged anew. The lawyers' fax machine began spewing out page after page of blank paper. Hundreds of bogus magazine subscriptions began showing up on their doorstep. And technicians began devising tools that would prevent Canter and Siegel from making good their threat. The most ingenious: a piece of software written by a Norwegian programmer that came to be known as the "cancelbot" -- a sort of information-seeking robot that roams the Internet looking for Canter and Siegel mass mailings and deletes them before they spread...

...down: the editor decides what to cover, the reporters gather the facts, and the news is packaged into a story and distributed to the masses. News on the Net, by contrast, is bottom up: it bubbles from newsgroups whenever anyone has anything to report. Much of it may be bogus, error-ridden or just plain wrong. But when writers report on their area of expertise -- as they often do -- it carries information that is frequently closer to the source than what is found in newspapers...

...here a mystical talisman that “Corinthians 17” predicts will usher in the rein of Mammon, son of Lucifer. (Don’t bother looking it up; it only exists, according to the film, in the version of the Bible found in Hell.) ...other argument against Mahan and Terry’s plan is that the Senior Gift makes Harvard’s generous financial aid program possible. Taken literally, this argument is so obviously bogus that it’s not really worth disputing. The Senior Gift produces roughly $30,000 a year, roughly 0.05 percent of the Harvard College Fund that the Gift goes into. That’s nowhere near enough money to make any real difference in the amount of financial aid we receive. What those who make this argument understand is that student giving has an influence...

...from the Chinese ones without a taste test. Although French regulations call for a truffle's origins to be clearly marked, truffle experts say many vendors either ignore the rules or engage in outright mislabeling. France's fraud-control directorate now carries out random DNA testing to flush out bogus-truffle dealers. Anyone caught intending to deceive the consumer with a Chinese truffle may be fined $1,300. Still, there are few inspectors and many truffles. "If the consumer is properly informed that they are eating a Chinese truffle, there is no problem," says Michel Courvoisier, director of the French...
