...long would Batista be able to operate without his coercive apparatus? Widely circulated Bohemia magazine announced that its next edition would contain many facts and stories suppressed under censorship. The rebels said they would try to bring off a general strike in Havana. At week's end, emboldened rebel bands seized two Havana radio stations long enough to broadcast anti-Batista recordings, forcefully pointing out what a general strike had achieved in Caracas...
...Seesaw (by William Gibson) needs only two for the cast. Henry Fonda is an Omaha lawyer, downhearted and adrift in New York while being divorced. Anne Bancroft is a warmhearted, racy-tongued, Bronx-to-Bohemia floater whom he meets at a party. All her life she has given too freely; he all his life has taken. Shuttling between their shabby little flats, they carry on a love affair in sickness and in health, in banter and in woe, bridging a cultural and temperamental divide better than they can blot out a memory of marriage...
With no one standing still long enough for the reader to get a look at him, the book becomes a series of faces and scenery flashing by along the road. Then one said: "You are the world's greatest painter...
Within the triangle of Amis, Osborne and Braine, the rest of the Lucky Jim school is encamped. John Wain (Hurry On Down ) is an Amis in whom the quinine water has changed to straight quinine. Thomas Hinde (Happy As Larry) explores the Welfare State Bohemia with a hero who feels that cadging a livelihood is "more honest," and Peter Towry (It's Warm Inside) writes the comedy of carping domesticity. The upstart philistinism that molds and mars the entire group is succinctly stated by John Braine's hero when he says that everything is "simply a question...
