...BOHOL ON THE DOWN LOW Paradise had a problem. We were ready to cast off our travel-stained togs when we realized that our rustic island bungalow already had a resident, who was hairy, eight-legged and about the size of a tennis ball. To our relief our uninvited guest eventually scuttled off and by morning was nearly forgotten. All it took for paradise to redeem itself was a short trek up to our resort's restaurant-cum-chill out lounge, a laid-back, thatched hut straight out of the Jungle Book...

...those who do manage to pull themselves out of the hammocks, Nuts Huts makes an ideal base for the leisurely exploration of Bohol Island's southern attractions, like the San Pedro Cathedral in nearby Loboc. The graceful 18th century architecture is impressive, but the real surprise is an unfinished highway overpass headed straight for the bell tower. Someone obviously screwed up: had the road been completed as planned, the cathedral would have had to be demolished. The truncated overpass has yet to be knocked down...

...Bohol Island is a one-and-a-half hour ferry ride southeast of Cebu city, and Nuts Huts, a three-hour drive inland from the port, is truly in the middle of nowhere. That's perfect for travelers who have overdosed on Spanish churches, major tourist attractions and diving in the Mindanao Sea. Visitors with more energy to expend can always jump on a mountain bike, go caving or see the thundering Tontonan Falls. As for us, we rarely got vertical in the four days we were there. LOOKING SWEET According to local legend, the 1,268 Chocolate Hills of Bohol were formed when a giant shed tears upon learning his lover had died. Scientists insist they are vestiges of a millennia-old tidal pattern. Whatever their origins, the hills look like a sea of 30-m-tall, slightly melted Hershey's Kisses, especially in the dry season (December to May) when they turn a rich chocolaty brown.
