...whether or not the frustrations will boil into violence undoubtedly lies with the young blacks. Says Boston's A. Reginald Eaves, head of the mayor's human rights office: "When the black kids find they can't get a piece of the pie, they're going to get a piece of the action. That means trouble." As Americans learned during the riots of the 1960s, however, ghetto violence explodes by a wholly unpredictable chemistry. The arrest of a cab driver was enough to trigger the 1967 riot in Newark. In New York last week, four policemen...

Baby-Bottle Boil. There may be less to the soft revolution than meets the eye. Bausch & Lomb began marketing its Softens on a limited basis last week in Portland, Ore., but so far soft lenses are virtually unavailable elsewhere in the U.S., and company officers say they will not be sold nationwide until next year. One potential competitor, Griffin Laboratories of Buffalo, only last month received Food and Drug Administration approval to begin testing its product. Another manufacturer, Union Corp. of New York City, has not even applied for approval...

Marathon Blast. Gan is not entirely without diversions. Its clear waters boil with bright tropical fish. Tuna can be caught from the pier, and fishing for shark and barracuda is superb. The island has a soccer field, golf course, assorted tennis and volleyball courts and no fewer than 21 bars. The specialty of the island is the "gozomie," a marathon blast that is thrown when anyone reaches the end of his nine-month tour and goes home. Over the five-day Christmas holiday, the men consumed 500 quarts of liquor, 12,500 bottles of beer, and 2,000 pints...

...land, and I like being near the ocean. At the edge. I have sympathy for the outlaw, the deviant. I am attracted by something extreme. I like to see real crazy people. That's why I live in New York. It is kind of a boil. You can really see the sickness there. As an artist, who must deal with these things, I am a little proud to have existed through all this. I'm a little bit crazy myself...

Nuclear power is just another way of boiling water: An atomic reactor sustains a fission reaction which produces heat used to boil water which drives electric turbines in the same way as in traditional, coal-fired plants. All coal contains traces of radioactive carbon, which is released when coal is burned. Recent studies suggest that boiling water reactors will leak over 14,000 times the amount of radioactivity produced by coal burning. Such a reactor is also only about 20 per cent efficient, which means over 80 per cent of the heat generated is wasted and must be released...
