...nuclear plant was promptly and safely shut down. Then, while duty officers at Con Ed's main control center in Manhattan-a huge, display-filled room somewhat like Mission Control in Houston-scrambled to make up for the power loss, lightning struck again. At 8:56 p.m. bolts knocked out two more upstate 345-kilovolt lines in Westchester that bring in power from upstate New York and New England. Three minutes later, lightning knocked out yet another line. Worse still, circuit breakers designed to reset automatically after the enormous voltage surge caused by a lightning bolt apparently failed...
Green's style does not evoke comparisons with the classical grace of many earlier Open winners. Yet he showed the same shot-making ability around the exquisitely manicured greens of Southern Hills that earned Tommy Bolt the championship there in 1958. One has to go back to the days of Leo Diegel to find a preeminent professional with such a knock-kneed and elbows akimbo stance...
...difficult reflects itself in the scores. When Bolt won the Open at Southern Hills in 1958 he only missed 13 greens in regulation over four days of competition and still shot a three over par 283. Bolt's victory was a popular one since he was a favorite son from Haworth, Oklahoma. Although Bolt was an outstanding player, he was even better known for his tempestuous temperament, which earned him the label "Thunder Bolt...
Callaghan and Carter set out for Newcastle early Friday morning, followed by two planeloads of reporters. Carter seemed to be running for office all over again and, as always, was a politically-minded dresser. The blue cashmere suit he wore was made from a bolt of cloth that Callaghan had given Carter when the P.M. visited Washington in March. The discreet gray pinstripes are formed by the repetition of Carter's -and Callaghan's-initials (see sample at right). Carter no sooner arrived at Woolsington Airport near Newcastle on this cool and sometimes cloudy day than he plunged...
...attention to the students, the ones most affected by their decisions. Their recent reform still fails to address the exam problem and the inconvenience of trying to compete for summer jobs with students who finish school in early May. (Heaven forbid that Yale do something right, and a lightening bolt plus two divine interventions should Harvard ever admit it.) Harvard's professors should extend themselves a little more for their students, and moving the college's starting date back to early September would help immeasurably. Of course, I've heard that the green flies of Maine are much less ferocious...
