...great American paradox of individual dignity in democratic mass. His "I" was an immense ego joined to an even larger "we," so that he wrote in Leaves of Grass, "[I am] one of the great nation, the nation of many nations," and in the embrace of his rhetoric (bombast that would go gossamer, radiant with the genius of his ardor, his generosity), he became endlessly specific about each trade, and put in motion, Homerically, each deckhand, stevedore, scholar, prostitute, drunkard, slave, "Kanuck, Tuckahoe, Congressman, Cuff," policeman, suicide, trapper, blacksmith, ploughboy, carpenter, contralto, spinning-girl, machinist, squaw, paving-man, flatboatman, fare...
Picking up where it left off five years ago, Bon Jovi delivers a piece of vintage '90s pop-metal, as straightforward as a stretch of the New Jersey Turnpike. The band's trove of clever hooks and jolly bombast once made it a cool alternative for kids suffering from heavy-metal fatigue. But pop taste, like a teen's attention span, never lasts. Crush tries to update itself with Older, a tune about honoring your roots, but what it really, really wants is to re-live the days when jeans were tight and hair was big. Fine, but haven...
Primal Scream have returned to show America what rock is all about. To the enervated nerves of modern rock, _Exterminator_ is a jolt of cold water. This is neither the bombast of the Smashing Pumpkins nor the manufactured sheen of No Doubt. _Exterminator_ is an attempt to recapture the glory of 1977, when punk seemed like it just might win. While straight-ahead punk does appear here (the glorious opening suite of "Kill All Hippies," "Accelerator" and "Exterminator"), more important is the group's appropriation of righteous anger. Leftist rage permeates the album, unifying techno ("Swastika Eyes"), hip-hop ("Pills...
...demonstrators; 83 Yemenis are killed. At the colonel's court martial, his attorney (Tommy Lee Jones) cries bureaucratic cover-up--which the script, from a story by former Navy Secretary James Webb, sees as more damning than the massacre of civilians. The issues demand nuance, not the rhetorical bombast offered in this muddle. It has something to offend every political sensibility but little to offer in thoughtful drama...
...listens. A song later, the funky meandering of "Eloquence" with the drop of bass line tumbled into sweeping and epic chorus. Backed up by a full band, the pure power of Falkner's music swept over the crowd without bullying the songs' pop intricacies. "My Lucky Day" draped the bombast of seventies' rock over the pop sensibilities of the Beatles. By the third song, the band had worked up a full sweat. The bassist was dancing and Falkner had struck enough Cheshire grin rock star poses to send fame loathers like Pearl Jam and angst mongers like the Smashing Pumpkins...
