...General Headquarters Air Force-430 officers, 2,500 men, 244 planes, divided into attacking and defending armadas, had begun to bomb the horned toads and rattlesnakes off the desert bed of Muroc Dry Salt Lake in inland California...
Through these strong-arm tactics, one student came very near to losing an eye through the firing of a tear gas bomb, as the little wax pellet flew out and hit him in the cyclid. This would never have happened, if the mob had been slowly but surely dealt with by proctors and Yard Cops who could have confiscated bursars cards, and broken the affair up in the same manner in which it had been started; namely in the spirit of good fun and lack of venomous malice. ...death-cell last week in Plötzensee Penitentiary in Berlin sat pale-faced, intellectual Helmuth Hirsch, the 21-year-old Jew who was arrested last December for plotting to kill with a bomb "a high German official" who newshawks quickly assumed was Dictator Hitler. Day before the Guffey bill windup, New York's New Dealing Robert F. Wagner had presented what was believed to be the Administration viewpoint when he rose...
...France and some of his major coups are a trifle too Parisian. Last week a few prominent journalists working in France were permitted to read what was supposed to be the entire report of the French Secret Service on what happened in Addis Ababa following the bomb attack on Italian Viceroy Rodolfo Graziani (TIME, March 1). This may or may not have been the real "lowdown," but it made interesting reading and is typical of French finesse in acquiring the goodwill of top-grade foreign correspondents by giving them a peep to ease their heroic curiosity...
