From the minarets of Gaza City mosques last week, Hamas sheiks praised the "heroic" suicide bomber of Afula. Boys pelted Israeli military headquarters in Gaza City with stones, then waited for the inevitable rubber bullets. A donkey carcass lay rotting by the side of the road in Jabalia camp. Small boys dragged tires to construct a barricade, filling the air with the acrid smell of burning rubber. A few miles away, the police building stood empty, the morning's expectation of handshakes and smiles all but forgotten...

Continued violence rocked Israel and the occupied territories on Wednesday, when a Palestinian suicide bomber exploded his car beside a bus in the northern Israeli town of Afula, killing seven and wounding 40. The Brothers, founded in 1991 by two Cuban-American veterans of the Bay of Pigs invasion, have rescued a total of 1,286 men, women and children; the oldest was 77, the youngest a five-day-old infant. Last year...

But last Friday, in an extraordinary pre-emptive strike against a possible surge of inflation, Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan declared that the central bank had raised short-term rates that very day. Although Greenspan had warned earlier in the week that an increase was likely, the news sent shock waves through Wall Street. The Dow Jones industrial average plunged 96.24 points to close Friday at 3871.42 for the sharpest sell...
