...wrestling. In most of the "fights," the punches are pulled but they still send skaters sprawling. When the girls roll onto the Masonite track, the contact becomes more genuine-with shrieking, scratching and hair pulling thrown in. The female heavy is Joan Weston, a $20,000-a-year blonde Bomber who sends opponents flipping over the guard rails with one twitch of her mighty hips. As her bumpy, bruised knuckles attest, she can be equally menacing with an uppercut ("I can't keep a long nail," she says). She takes her lumps too, most often from a gang...
Over the coast that morning in 1966 a U.S. B-52 bomber on a routine nuclear patrol collided with the Strategic Air Command KC-135 tanker that was refueling it. Wreckage rained on Palomares, including three unarmed hydrogen bombs. A fourth bomb fell into the sea. There were no deaths or serious injuries among the villagers, but a U S. airman mumbled in schoolboy Spanish after parachuting to safety: "Ustedes todos muertos [You're all dead]." Because two bombs' casings had cracked, several thousand airmen and sailors spent 44 days carrying away almost six acres of topsoil...
...designate, he expressed the hope that the Viet Nam war would be over within a year. He still favors beefing up the U.S. military machine roughly along the lines advocated by the Joint Chiefs of Staff-converting the Navy to nuclear power, giving the Air Force the advanced manned bomber it has been seeking for years, going ahead with the Army's anti-ballistic missile system, modernizing and perhaps expanding the Strategic Air Command's missile arsenal beyond present plans. All of this is at least generally in tune with Nixon's campaign talk about a "security...
What the Air Force wants is dubbed an "Advanced Manned Strategic Aircraft" (AMSA). Built more like a rocket than a plane, the new bomber would hit a top speed of Mach 2.5 (1,800 m.p.h.) at high altitude on the way to its target. Then, swooping low to avoid detection by enemy radar, it would slow to Mach 1.2 (790 m.p.h.) in the denser air. With a crew of four, it would carry a payload twice that of the B-52 and, with mid-air refueling, would have a range of more than 6,000 miles...
...advance. With this gap, the nation could be committed to an $8.1 billion weapons system it might not need. And with the defense budget already swollen with the demands of Viet Nam, McNamara refused to take that risk. Also, some defense officials felt that in the missile age, manned bombers were unnecessary. With Clark Clifford's arrival in the Pentagon, attitudes changed. The new Secretary of Defense was "inclined" to agree that there is a need for the new bomber, and with that, AMSA gained new impetus. Already, $120 million has been spent for advanced research and development. However...
