Like 24 (Jack Bauer and his ticking-time-bomb scenarios return Jan. 11), BSG tests the morality and rationalizations of an age of fear. Roslin is idealistic but possibly blinded by belief; Adama is high-handed but often right to be that way. Even swashbuckling pilot Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff) is unstable as often as heroic. The Cylons, meanwhile, prove a fascinating society, racked with doubt and riven by debate over their religious mission...
Israel’s response is criticized as “disproportionate and inappropriate” because so many civilians in Gaza have, sadly, been killed in the operation. What this sort of calculus ignores, however, is the tens of millions of dollars Israel has invested in bomb shelters throughout the south, the early warning system it has installed, and the mass migration of Israelis from their homes to avoid the murderous rain of rockets falling daily from the sky. ...Israel's offensive and a day of patchy clouds, Israeli warplanes continued to pound Gaza, destroying buildings allegedly linked to Hamas. In one incident, witnessed by this reporter from a hilltop overlooking the northeast corner of the Israel-Gaza border, an Israeli F-16 dropped a half-ton bomb on what appeared to be half a dozen rocket launchers. Even as the heavy woomph of the bomb hitting the ground reached us, about three miles away, one of the rockets blasted skywards, likely triggered by the exploding bomb...
