GREENE SHOULD BE politely applauded for elevating the spy genre above the level of James Bond schlock. But John LeCarre has also done that, and you don't hear people whispering his name as a serious candidate for the Nobel Prize. To introduce "the human factor" into adventure stories is admirable, and Greene has always done it with finesse; the problem is that he never gives that humanity the extra dimension it achieves in the work of truly major writers. Greene leaves us with kiss-and-tell philosophy, and a coolness toward life that throughout his books is never satisfactorily...

Conditions got so bad in the overcrowded county jail in El Paso, Texas, that U.S. District Court Judge William Sessions decided a year ago to order improvements. Little happened. A $17 million bond issue for a new jail was proposed; the voters turned it down. Shanks has signed French Documentary Maker Marcel Ophuls (The Sorrow and the Pity) to film reports from Europe and former Esquire Editor Harold Hayes to oversee the editorial content. In a confidential memo to his bosses, Shanks wrote that 60 Minutes is "pontifical and humorless, and its 14-minute pieces nowadays often seem too long." He promised...

...Fury should have been DePalma's goony epic. The ingredients include a pair of telekinetic teenagers (double Carrie's load), nefarious international spy organizations, a dastardly Bond-style villain, a goofily bloated score by John Williams, a delightfully eccentric group of players, and a mammoth budget--courtesy of schlock-producer Frank Yablans. The movie fails not because it's so gory, and not even because DePalma cruelly lingers over the deaths of our favorite characters (although this is annoying), but because the storyline is so slack. Screenwriter John Farris has plotted the film with routine situations that are unworthy...
