Steven Soderbergh's remake of Andrei Tarkovsky's science-fiction classic, based on the Stanislaw Lem novel, can't touch the 1972 film's austere poignancy, and McElhone lacks the bewitching beauty of Natalya Bondarchuk in the original Solaris. ...acting in this film is marvelous, particularly Innokenty Smoktunosky's Vanya. His petulant spats with his maman, his grandiose pretensions, his weepy self-pity; the sarcastic facial expressions alone are phenomenal. Sergei Bondarchuk, as Dr. Astrov, is a bit too much the Russian bear for my taste. Astrov's passions are too often expressed by the tremor of voice and moistness of eye that Omar Sharif made infamous in Dr. Zhivago. But he can be subtle when necessary as in his scenes with Sonya, in which he delicately and deftly refuses her offer of love...
Eagle's View. It is, unfortunately, a fleeting triumph. Almost too late for Wellington but none too soon for the viewer, the Prussians, all teeth and bayonets, burst from the woods to end the battle. As they do, the score blares a Haydn anthem. The theme, Bondarchuk is well aware, became the melody for Deutschland über Alles. The subtlety of that touch matches H.A.L. Craig's screenplay and Steiger's Napoleon...
