...Clarke Duncan). Convicted for the unthinkable murder of two little girls, Coffey is placed on the Green Mile, the stretch of walkway that brings death row prisoners from their cells to the electric chair (usually called the last mile, but this particular one has green floor tiles). The unique bond that evolves between the sympathetic Edgecomb and the unexpectedly gentle Coffey forms the basis for the psychological, spiritual and moral exploration that permeates the film. The strong ensemble cast is further enhanced by the performances of David Morse (Contact), who plays Brutus Howell, Edgecomb's friend and another sympathetic guard...

...BRIGHT SIDE OF BONDS The year 1999 has been a tough one for bond investors. With interest rates going up, bond prices have declined. But higher bond yields also create opportunities for fixed-income investors. A tax swap--in which you sell a bond that has lost some of its value and then buy a similar bond in order to take a capital loss--allows you to realize the losses on your bond portfolio. "This is my definition of a high-class problem," Summers wryly remarked...

HAPPY MUNI YEAR Low inflation and high yields are making municipal bonds an attractive buy. The yield on benchmark munis reached 5.99% a few weeks ago, a peak for the year. "Historically, muni yields are not this close to Treasury yields with the same maturity," says Mark Tenenhaus, director of municipal research for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. The kicker is that the muni bonds are tax free...
