...resentful, has it that bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard split from that band because the lead vocalist wanted to stay true to the experimental spirit of alternative rock, while Ament and Gossard wanted to become big-time rock stars. The band they formed, Mother Love Bone, combined a heavy-metal sound with bouncy tunes. Just as the group seemed ready to break through in 1990, its lead singer died of a heroin overdose...

...home in months or years. Or ever. On this and the following pages, TIME publishes the first photographs to appear in the U.S. of the ruined nuclear plant, the cleanup operation and the surrounding countryside. One of the few Americans who have seen Pripyat is Dr. Robert Gale, a bone- marrow specialist who helped Soviet doctors cope with the Chernobyl disaster, which so far has cost 26 lives. ''It's a very dramatic thing to see a partially destroyed nuclear power plant,'' Gale told reporters after taking a helicopter tour of the scene. ''The damage itself doesn't appear...

...Alaska. This is, after all, his own nation, yet it is stranger than Zanzibar. The pale north light itself is delusive, lingering in the weeks before and after the solstice till midnight and more. The tourist's mind accepts this fifth-grade geography stunner, but his blood and bone do not. They are roiled by restless energy, and they want to order another drink, carry it outside and watch the sun not set. (Whap! Smack! Fierce four-engine mosquitoes alter this plan instantly.) Roadlessness accounts for some of the newcomer's sense of dislocation. You can drive from Jersey City...

The CD takes musical potshots at Administration figures ranging from Condi Rice to Karl Rove, but what has got at least some people upset is its cover: the President with a bone through his nose, an image that prompted radio and billboard powerhouse Clear Channel to ban billboard ads for the album. Shearer talked with TIME's Richard Zoglin about the controversy, the state of political satire and the chances of a Spinal Tap reunion...

...survival of coral. Corals have a symbiotic relationship with a kind of algae that provide nutrients and energy through photosynthesis - not to mention the vivid colors we associate with coral reefs. When corals are stressed by rising temperatures, the algae are expelled by the coral, turning the reefs bone white. That's a "bleaching event," and bleached coral are left weakened and defenseless against disease. Increased carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere also lead to more acidic seas, which impairs the ability of corals to form their skeletal reefs. (In acidic water, the reefs simply dissolve.) "Corals appear...
