Bonin refused to divulge the hiding place of his gold hoard and the bandits first beat him " until his body was a mass of blood and bruises," then broke his bones. The victim was reported unwilling to speak, so the bandits roasted him over a fire in the kitchen hearth; then left him for dead. Bonin was not dead! No trace of the inquisitioners was found...
