Within the cave Greenhut found 12 ossuaries, or bone boxes, dating to the 1st century. Six of the limestone containers had been disturbed by grave robbers. But one of the intact ossuaries bore the inscription "Yehosef bar Qayafa," or Joseph, son of Caiaphas, and included the remains of a woman, a man of about 60 and four children. The outside of the ossuary is decorated in a rare and intricate pattern of concentric circles and rosettes, perhaps befitting a priest's tomb. Postmenopausal women often get osteoporosis, a weakening of the bones that can lead to easy fracture. A report in Science may explain why. A drop-off in the hormone estrogen leads to an overproduction of osteoclasts, cells whose job is to scour away aging bone cells. Trouble is, other cells called osteoblasts, which fill in the holes left by osteoclasts, don't increase proportionately. If humans respond the same way as lab mice, new drugs could supersede current estrogen-replacement therapy, which can cause fluid retention and leg cramps...

After landing, we begin our journey back in time. The forests in these wet areas are open and cool, even though the equatorial sun beats down on the upper stories of the canopy. At one point we discover leopard droppings containing black hair and some bone bits. The Pygmies claim it is gorilla hair, though only dna analysis could tell for sure. Fay thinks it's possible, since he has documented leopard attacks on gorillas. Samory, one of the trackers, claims leopards kill the immensely strong apes with surprise attacks in which the cat quickly snaps its jaws around...
