Despite disagreements on other is sues, West Germany's major parties have religiously respected the Federal Republic's No. 1 political taboo - that Bonn should never consider or discuss recognition of the East German regime of Communist Boss Walter Ulbricht. Now that shibboleth of two decades has been demolished. In search of a campaign issue in next September's national elections, the Free Democratic Party-which has shucked its old conservative image for a daring almost New Left look -has already declared that it favors recognition of East Germany. Last week, in a slightly hedged manner, Willy...

Though the Soviets would greatly prefer Brandt to Strauss-who they suspect will want nuclear weapons for West Germany-the Russians fear that any overtures to Bonn would enrage their most loyal allies, the East Germans and Poles. Such a departure would also ruin their rationale for having intervened in Czechoslovakia to crush an alleged West German plot to pull that country into the West's orbit. As last week's events in Czechoslovakia showed, the Soviets may need an excuse to remain there for some time...

"We are a pragmatic people," explains a senior Israeli trade official. "We cannot spit in their faces forever." The breakthrough can be traced to several years before the Middle East war, when it was revealed that Germany had been secretly supplying Israel with millions of dollars worth of arms. With much embarrassment, Bonn stopped these shipments rather than face political reprisals by Arab nations, particularly their implied threats to recognize East Germany...

After 24 composers-including Igor Stravinsky, Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen-had signed a petition on his behalf, Yun was allowed to resume composing behind bars. The Bonn government, angered by Seoul's cloak-and-dagger tactics on German soil, threatened to suspend its $25 million program of economic aid. South Korea first reduced Yun's stiff sentence to 15 years, then to ten, and last month decided to free him. He is expected to leave for Germany next month...
