WORLDS' ENDS-Jacob Wassermann -Boni & Liveright ($2.50). This is what happens to individuals when their particular worlds turn end for end, says Author Wassermann in effect. He proceeds to cite "case histories": Peasant Adam studied his only son for signs of weak character so long and so truculently that the heir killed himself. The father, remorseful, claimed to have murdered the boy; hung himself. Golovin, voluble Russian revolutionist, had in his power a woman for whom he craved. To her he talked all night about his vicious deeds and cynical philosophy and in the morning left her unharmed, still...
PEACE OR WAR?-J. M. Kenworthy, M. P.-Boni & Liveright ($2.50). The Thesis. Nine years after the "war to end war," war is still a legal institution. Italy rattles her arms in France's ear; Great Britain looks at Japan and prepares Singapore; Japan, the United States and Great Britain engage in a naval armament race; Russia growls at Rumania; in times of peace everyone is making ready. But isn't war unthinkable? Would it be possible to prosecute another war successfully with the memory of the Great War's horrors so fresh in the minds...
...PROHIBITION MANIA-Clarence Darrow & Victor S. Yarros-Boni & Liveright ($2.50). Using the much-heralded dry arguments of Professor Irving Fisher of Yale (advanced in Prohibition at its Worst) as a tackling dummy, Authors Yarros (Chicago journalist) & Darrow (famed Chicago lawyer) endeavor to prove that the 18th amendment should be considered an outmoded though undeniably humorous fantasy. Practically all of Professor Fisher's conclusions, 38 of his charts connecting the dry law with the decrease in drunkenness and juvenile delinquency, the disappearance of disorderly houses, the reduction of deaths due to alcoholism, are demolished with an angry despatch. The book...
MONEY WRITES!-Upton Sinclair-A. & C. Boni ($2.50). Once again fuming, foaming Upton Sinclair girds himself beyond all reason, leaps on his lame but willing steed, and (like Stephen Leacock's famed knight) rides off in all directions. According to Upton, the successful writers of today write either consciously or unconsciously for the benefit of nasty Wall Street. Most of Money Writes! is devoted to a mildly interesting, not very convincing attempt to prove this theory. One by one Joseph Herges-heimer, Gertrude Atherton, et al., are pointed at with the finger of scorn and it is all pretty...
