...Booker T. Washington, widely known as an educator and one of the most enlightened of his race, was born in Virginia just before the Civil War. His ambition for knowledge led him to travel five hundred miles "by walking and begging rides both in wagons and in cars" to Hampton Institute from which he graduated in 1875, later becoming an instructor in the same institution.
