The value of this book lies in its honest, informative (and, at times, brilliant) attempt to finish the synthesis begun in the Reformation era. The no-win policy of post-Reformation Catholicism and Protestantism left too many exhausted by trivia to look to the future exigencies of an eirenic theology.
