Suddenly the silence was broken by the boom of a shotgun. Three police cruisers, their tires squealing, encircled an old faded green station wagon idling at a curb. A pack of fresh-faced young men and women in navy blue polyester jackets dashed around the corner of the Dogwood Inn motel. Each brandished a drawn revolver and a look that said, One false move, and you're dead...
Makers and suppliers of FRT (fire retardant-treated) plywood, which was used mostly in houses east of the Mississippi, insist that the product is perfectly sound when properly installed. But homebuilders who used the wood during the 1980s housing boom are taking the manufacturers to court. In New Jersey alone, 45 lawsuits have been filed seeking damages that could amount to more than $130 million...
Mesmerized by the prospect of a business boom that could produce thousands of new white-collar and service jobs, Milwaukee's civic leaders never gave much thought to the possibility of civil unrest. So it came as a shock when alderman Michael McGee proclaimed earlier this month that he was forming a Black Panther militia that would resort to "actual fighting, bloodshed and urban guerrilla warfare" unless the city did more to improve the lot of impoverished African Americans. Inner-city blacks, warned McGee, were fed up with white officials spending money on shopping malls and skyscrapers while prosperity passed...
Then Baldwin and the Whiffles -- an Ur-nerd quartet in plaid cummerbunds and smug smiles -- launch into a rendition of Sh-Boom at the charm-school talent show, and Cry-Baby takes off to parody paradise. It becomes a real musical (new songs, production numbers) and a careering melodrama: Grease with grit. Cliches collide, and so do jalopies; lightning strikes; the jailhouse rocks. Lovers lose themselves in a French-kissing dance that would have been banned on Bandstand...
...these the makings of another '50s-style 3-D movie boom? Probably not. The backlist of conventional 3-D films is still pretty limited, and titles like It Came from Outer Space and Friday the 13th Part 3 have not improved with age. Imax Systems has installed a 3-D theater in Vancouver and has plans to build two more, in Galveston, Texas, and Taiwan, but there are no plans yet to put them in typical suburban malls. Moreover, as glorious as the new technology may seem today, it is likely to be perceived by an increasingly jaded public...
