...unprecedented run of global titles--in the past six years, five Indians have won the coveted Miss Universe or Miss World crowns while four others were runners-up--has spawned a beauty boom in a country where only a generation ago women in the glamour business were considered licentious. Now, conservative middle-class dads urge their daughters into bikinis, and moms put them on high-protein diets intended (perhaps naively) to help them achieve the ramp-mandatory 5-ft. 7-in. height requirement. The organizer of the annual Miss India contest, the Times of India group of newspapers and magazines...
That's far from a biblical tithe, but still the highest level in 28 years. Why? For many years, the multimillionaires of the booming technology industries didn't feel very secure in their newfound wealth and weren't at a point in their lives where they thought much about their legacies. Now that's changing. Silicon Valley CEOs, along with other newly rich Americans, are finally stepping up to the collection plate. Do they want continued prosperity which can fund greater social services, or do they want massive tax cuts for the same few hundred impossibly wealthy Americans who would have benefited from the estate...
...dark and hopeless purgatory for the chubby, lazy or just physically confounded who couldn't pass their PT test the first, second, third or seventh time. People went there and disappeared from view, but they rarely went home. The Army, strapped for recruits in the economic boom times, wasn't about to lose anybody just because they couldn't hack it right away; they were willing to wait as long as it took...
