...real comedy is supposed to occur when Maxie and Jan struggle for use of the body. When Close is boring and dull, we know that Jan is in control; when she is loud and obnoxious and talks like an odd synthesis of Mae West and Betty Boop, we know Maxie is in the driver's seat. There are some funnyish scenes when Maxie takes over at inopportune moments, like when Jan is at a society fundraiser, or when she is in bed with Nick, but her character is simply not interesting enough to keep these scenes alive...

BELLY BUTTONS. The picture inside the dust sleeve of my first album has me, like, in this Betty Boop pose with my belly button showing. Then when people reviewed the album, they kept talking about my cute belly button. I started thinking about it and I said, "Yeah, well, I do like my belly button." "I really love Renata," John told reporters. "And yes, I'm nervous." John, who once described himself as a "male Betty Boop," reportedly gave his beloved a large heart-shaped necklace with 26 diamonds before flying to New Zealand, first stop on a global concert tour. Said John, who was born in Pinner, England: "I'm really pleased I got married in Sydney because it meant none of my relatives could...

...really the creation of many artists, each one honing a speciality. Ward Kimball, Les Clark and Frank Thomas were particularly adept at complicated fast-moving action sequences, while Art Babbitt concentrated on large, slow, furry creatures like Goofy and the Big Bad Wolf. Grim Natwick, who created Betty Boop for another studio, was the early specialist in femininity. Eric Larson's skill with cute round little animals contrasted nicely with John Lounsbery's sleek menace-Cruella in One Hundred and One Dalmatians, Alex Alligator in Fantasia. That film, of course, was the great test of the studio...
