...Schiff, 46, is not just some opinionated boor. He possesses a self-awareness that renders him a bit less obnoxious than I've described, and he happens to have done a better job than just about anyone else of forecasting in 2006 and early 2007 what was about to happen in U.S. financial markets. This wasn't a broken-clock-is-right-twice-a-day thing: Schiff appeared on the national scene just as the credit bubble was reaching maximum inflation and offered a critique of the nation's unsustainably debt-fueled economic trajectory that is now--after the fact...

...counter that all raw milk is not created equal. Government surveys, they claim, lump together raw milk that is destined for pasteurization--and therefore doesn't have to be table-ready--along with milk, like McAfee's, that is produced for human consumption. But that doesn't convince Kathryn Boor, chair of food science at Cornell University, who grew up on a farm drinking raw milk--but won't do it now. "You can't always tell when a cow is sick," she says. "And cows can sometimes kick the milking machine off. Generally, what's on the barn floor...

Prime Minister Jaroslaw said he thought the responsibility of governing would help the two political parties mature; instead they taught him a lesson in the perils of coalition building. Within months Lepper was publicly calling Jaroslaw a "boor." (Kaczynski responded that Lepper was a "brawler.") Lepper subsequently weathered charges of trading jobs for sex, but was eventually sacked in July of this year over allegations of corruption. (Lepper denies all charges against him.) The Interior Minister, a Kaczynski ally, then lost his job in the face of allegations that he had hindered a corruption investigation into Lepper's Agriculture Ministry...

...just too easy to loathe Barry Bonds. As he approaches one of the most important achievements in American sport--Hank Aaron's all-time record of 755 home runs--everyone knows about Bonds the boor. He's fought with teammates, dissed the press and shunned the notion that athletes must strive to be adored. Then there's that whole steroids thing. In a recent TIME.com poll, 77% of respondents didn't want Bonds to break Aaron's record...

Confidence is a requirement of someone who works with flame, but Batali sometimes slips into an overconfident caricature, the boor at the center of the room. Later that night he will tell Lagasse about a poorly attended cooking demo he did at last year's housewares show for a distracted crowd. It had been a running joke this weekend that few people had come last year, but now Batali let loose: "I'm like, 'Do you know how much people in New York would pay to f______ stand where you're standing?'" Batali was giggling, and everyone doubled over...
