...creakier voice, Joe Namath scored big with his audience in Li'l Abner. Making his musical debut at Atlanta's Civic Center, the former New York Jet nimbly slipped through some opening-night tight spots. When upstaged by a squealing pig, he simply outbellowed the boorish ham. Later, when his pitch wandered way offsides in a love duet with Hee-Haw's Misty Rowe as Daisy Mae, off-Broadway Joe just laughed along with the twittering crowd and won a round of sympathetic applause. Many Third World nations have discovered that the Soviets, for all their support of revolution and liberation movements, can be uncomfortable, even unpleasant, allies. They are generous with arms but stingy with other economic aid, and their advisers are often boorish "ugly Russians." If nothing else, the Soviets are persistent, and they accept setbacks as only temporary. The Kremlin also has a word for regimes that have adopted Communism and the Moscow line: irreversible...

His braying inanities lighten the otherwise disjointed first act. Brian McCue's portrayal of Scwarz, however, is uneven, improving considerably from the first act to the second. When he first meets Lulu in the opening of the play, McCue relies too much on a series of mannerisms--rising on his toes, rubbing his hands, pacing around briskly--that distract attention from his passionate words. Japes Emerson turns in a sporadic performance, though he is cursed...
