...just what Egypt's role against Israel ought to be. So last week Sadat decided it was time to about-face. Addressing the central committee of the Arab Socialist Union, Egypt's only political party, Sadat announced to gasps and grins that he had decided to boot Soviet "advisers" out of Egypt. What was more, to the astonishment of possibly even Anwar Sadat, the Russians went. They commenced to depart aboard huge Soviet jet transports that began arriving at Cairo West airbase in numbers large enough to unsettle normal air traffic over the Mediterranean...

Anne of the Thousand Days--A boring re-enactment of the Ann Boleyn-Henry VIII conflict that's inaccurate to boot. Genevieve Bujold's Anne, however, is lovely, and almost makes the film worth seeing. With Loves of Isadora, a mess, but a showcase for Vanessa Redgrave's great talent. ORSON WELLES CINEMA, Call...

Besides being a racist--and, of course, a killer--Doyle is also a bit of a boot-fetishist. One scene showing him in his apartment after an alienated liaison with a nameless woman wearing a particularly amazing pair of purple and vinyl boots, typifies the atmosphere of the film. The room is bare and cold; the furniture lacks unity or warmth; clothes, papers, and boots are strewn about everywhere. The fear that their sleep might be interrupted by a club in the head or a police boot in the groin has long since died within them. In the hallway outside, a girl in a pink blanket informs the few still awake downstairs that it's after curfew and everyone but the Night Crew should be sleeping. In the timelessness inside this occupied building, her directive has a physical...

Pavlo tells how a Regular Army slob stumblingly pursues through boot camp and battle the mythic promise of the recruiting posters that THE ARMY WILL MAKE A MAN OF YOU! Pacino makes Pavlo a walking antipersonnel device, a Bouncing Betty that chops his foes, and himself, off at the crotch. Pacino's previous roles (most conspicuously, Michael in The Godfather) have blazed with a menace that he now transforms into a quivering, infantile bravado, a would-be Lieut. Galley, played for explosive laughs. The only buddy he rescues is a dead one. The only atrocity he achieves...
