Hayes runs the Homies & Popz through a tight workout spiked with lectures on focus, attitude and respect. He leads a boot-camp jog, yelling out "Compton Cricket!" as they answer "U.S.A.!" For Hayes, the highlight of the trip to Britain was having young men "who grew up in all this violence" preach the gospel of peace to Adams and the wannabe gangsters of Belfast, who were planning a tribute to the violent rapper Tupac Shakur (gunned down in Las Vegas in 1996) until the homies told them that ain't cool. One of their ex-teammates is doing hard time...
...Really, this film should aspire to be like "Friends". Without the ability to luxuriate in fluff that a feature accords, I'm confident the TV writers could have taken the same material and made it succinctly engaging, with more consistent jokes and probably more sincerity to boot. Instead, the movie infuriatingly waters down what might have made a decent sitcom, and we're left only with the remnants of sitcom artifices, without any punch...
EDITOR'S NOTE: TIME Daily writer Frank Pellegrini, at a ripe 27 years, has taken a leave of absence to join the Army Reserve. He is currently undergoing basic training - boot camp - and then will spend several months in an Army journalism school. Given the difficulty the armed forces are experiencing in recruiting qualified young people these days, we think his experiences and impressions are worth sharing. His dispatches, some handwritten and snail-mailed (Internet cafes are evidently not part of the standard equipment at basic training), are arriving irregularly. Here is the first, and others will be posted...
...Athletic supporter. Eyeglass band (if you wear eyeglasses). Running shoes - they don't make you run in boots anymore. "Today's Army" is how they answer the phones at the recruiting office, and that's what I'm starting to worry about. I'm doing this for the money, for the exercise, for the adventure of it, but also because I want some of what my father and my uncle and my boss and Bob Dole get to look back on when they're 64: military days. I'm going to boot camp at the same spot where...
...might be having trouble making deals, because he had not sold the movie rights for MICHAEL CRICHTON'S new novel, Timeline, due out next month. Ovitz put such talk to rest last week when Paramount signed on for the film. It will be directed by a big name to boot: RICHARD DONNER (Lethal Weapons 1, 2, 3 and 4). Folks at Paramount weren't talking, but the film, which is said to be a Jurassic Park-esque tale of time travel and technological marvels, is slated for release in summer...
