...massacre bore all the hallmarks of the guerrilla group known as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and came almost exactly one year after Indian troops launched their offensive to disarm the Tigers. Indian soldiers had arrived in Sri Lanka in July 1987 to help implement an Indo-Sri Lankan agreement that gives the minority Tamils a greater measure of autonomy. But militants on opposite sides of the bloody Sri Lankan conflict united in rejecting the agreement...
While elitists on both sides would probably argue that such an arrangement would bore the supposedly simpleminded American voter--a justification they have used before to limit the number of debates--the chances are that these voters would appreciate not being patronized. More likely than not, these same voters care enough about the plight of America's farmers and its homeless, the drug problem, the AIDS crisis and our ability to compete in the international marketplace to sit up and pay attention...
...larger arenas. Bart holds certain truths to be self-evident. Chief among these is his unfashionable conviction that individualism must cease when it threatens the legitimate, shared concerns of community. This belief is not a late-blooming flower of incipient dotage. As a fledgling professor during the 1960s, Giamatti bore the plumage of the counterculture. His clothes were rumpled, his hair longish; he sported a goatee and an unassuming, downscale, fist-around-a- can-of-beer manner. Students were attracted by this charisma. They enrolled in his courses and came out of them equally entranced by their teacher...

Still, Daniel Koshland Jr., editor of Science, who admitted to releasing the Stanford results a week early in order to coincide with the NIH meeting, strongly backed the scientists' right to continue their research. Said Koshland: "This is an excellent example of careful, scientifically controlled use of fetal tissue to attack major human disease." Moreover, the fetal...
Dukakis' TV reviews have jumped around in approximate relationship to the polls. Early on he was derided as an untelegenic bore. After Atlanta, his TVQ soared. Now a backlash is setting in ("His tone is at once annoyed and complacent, that of a self-satisfied scold" -- George Will). In truth, Dukakis may be close to the ideal TV candidate: physically ungainly and ill- proportioned when seen from a distance but a compelling presence in close- up. His speaking style is a good blend of the conversational and the resonant, and he makes the canniest use of pauses since Jack Benny...
