Barking and Dagenham - the two neighborhoods elect separate members of Parliament but make up a single London borough council - have witnessed rapid demographic change since the last national census, in 2001. At the time, 80% of locals identified themselves as "white - British." There's been a big influx of nonwhite families since then, with many blacks and Asians - British-born as well as new immigrants - looking for cheap housing. "There's a sense of competition for finite resources," says Jon Cruddas, Dagenham's MP and a Labour Party member. "These are generic forces, but they collide in an intense form...
Perhaps this is why the possibility of a new, Venice-like waterway in the heart of Brooklyn held such appeal. Against all odds, for the past several years Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration has lobbied to turn the borough's Gowanus Canal - a foul, PCB-laden channel that winds for nearly two miles (about 3 km) - into a destination spot for condo dwellers and upscale retail developers. In a concurrent storyline, the NYPD attempts to regain the community’s trust after an officer from the precinct shoots and kills an honor student from the projects...

It takes some imagination to think that it was here where John Osborne’s “Look Back in Anger” premiered in 1956. Osborne’s play took a harshly realistic look at working class life, marking him as one of several British playwrights and novelists in the late...
When new owners took over an apartment building in the New York City borough of Queens, they promptly set about filing eviction notices, suing nearly half of the building's tenants - some of them multiple times - within the first 16 months. That amounted to 965 court proceedings against 2,124 apartments, compared with just 50 court proceedings in the final year of the previous owner. The complaints alleged that the tenants were subletting illegally or had not paid their rent or security deposits, even though the tenants often had records proving otherwise. To the tenants, it seemed as though every...
