...aviation headset, made by Bose, a Framingham, Mass., manufacturer of hi-fi speakers, is one of the latest applications of antinoise, a surprising new technology that is changing the way people block unwanted sounds -- from the whine of electrical transformers to the rumble of internal- combustion engines -- while leaving human voices, alarm bells and other useful sounds untouched. The technology should have many uses: the American Medical Association estimates that more than 9 million U.S. workers are exposed to hazardous noise levels on the job. In some professions -- notably mining, shipbuilding, food processing and printing -- it is not unusual...
...authenticity of God's revealed word. But the real-life author will be lucky if he enjoys the same clemency as his fictional counterpart. His literary twisting of the Koran is the central transgression for which the Ayatullah Khomeini has condemned him to death. Explains Indian- born writer Mihir Bose: "Every Muslim, whether fundamentalist or liberal, believes the Koran is literally the very word of God, preserved in heaven and transmitted by the angel Gabriel through Muhammad." But that may not take long. Amstrad recently reduced the price of its model from $799 to $499, and Magnavox is currently offering a $200 rebate on purchases of its $700 Videowriter. If personal writers prove to be like other new products in the fast-paced consumer electronics industry, prices will continue...
...Muslims attending the University of Dhaka, more than 400 students packed the auditorium to watch Shuktara, a popular weekly television drama. Outside, high winds and torrential rains buffeted the building. Without warning, the roof collapsed, killing at least 35 people and injuring scores of others. Said Amalendu Bose, one of the survivors hurt in the disaster: "It was like hell let loose all of a sudden." Rear Admiral Sultan Ahmed, the No. 2 man in the Bangladesh government, arrived on the scene to supervise rescue efforts. The task of freeing victims from the rubble was hampered by a power failure...
Arriving in China, Treadup's impressions are immediately negative. His hatred of the blatant imperialism practiced by the Great Powers in the wake of the 1900 Bose Rebellion is also at least partly foreshadowed by the earlier groundwork. In these transitional sections the book tends to suffer from over-elaborate retail and reverie...
