Every July the country's leading disaster scientists and emergency planners gather in Boulder, Colo., for an invitation-only workshop. Picture 440 people obsessed with the tragic and the safe, people who get excited about earthquake "shake maps" and righteous about flood insurance. It's a spirited but wonky crowd that is growing more melancholy every year...

...Even as he confessed, Karr was suspiciously evasive when asked about the details. And doubts were later raised about whether he was even in Colorado when JonBenet was murdered. He has, of course, not yet been convicted or even charged with the crime. Boulder County district attorney Mary Lacy stressed in a news conference Thursday that her office, despite the confession, is still sifting through the evidence and proceeding with exceptional caution. "There have been no charges filed at this time," Lacy pointed out. "There is a presumption of innocence." She also seemed to suggest that the arrest...

...Karr has now let the world into some of his secrets. On Wednesday evening, the wan, sandy-haired one-time grade school teacher arrived at Bangkok's Suan Phlu immigration pen, to spend the night in a solitary cell. The day before, a judge in Boulder, Colorado, had issued an arrest warrant for Karr in the nearly decade-old murder of JonBenet Ramsey, the six-year-old child beauty pageant contestant. Karr has put up no legal barriers to the extradition, so getting him back to the U.S. will presumably be simply a matter of arranging for the marshals to escort him back to Colorado...

...Colorado ski and recreation company Vail Resorts Inc. announced it would purchase 100% of its energy use - roughly 152,000 megawatt-hours a year - from wind farms. But that doesn't mean Vail is dumping its old energy providers. Instead it has purchased "wind power credits" from a Boulder-based company called Renewable Choice Energy, which in turn pays wind farms throughout the country to produce electricity - enough to offset 211 million lbs. of carbon dioxide emissions each year. This purchase makes Vail the second-largest buyer of wind energy in the nation behind the supermarket super-chain Whole Foods...
