Just before the German S.S. Hansa left Hamburg with 993 passengers and 400 crew for her latest Manhattan-bound voyage, seven of the crew developed high fever and nausea and were put ashore. On the high seas 24 more, including kitchen help and dining saloon stewards, took sick with identical symptoms. Twenty-four hours before the Hansa reached New York Harbor the ship's young chief surgeon, Dr. Helmuth Paul Otto Grieshaber was obliged to make up his mind on a point which involved medical ethics, maritime law and business expediency...
Broadway Melody of 1938 (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer). Mrs. Caroline Whipple (Binnie Barnes), wife of a confection tycoon, owns a horse named Star Gazer, beloved by Sally Lee (Eleanor Powell) whose father bred him. Congo immediately took to Dr. Blair, who three times a day fed him bananas, cabbages, carrots, sweet potatoes, condensed milk. Except for three rough days, Congo took his food with relish. Normally okapis are browsers. They eat tender...
...Bound to disappoint the admirers of Gypsy Rose Lee, whose sultry gifts are confined to such lines as "I'll cut your heart out and stuff it like an olive," You Can't Have Everything should satisfy almost everyone else. It gives the clowning Ritz Brothers the opportunity to extract the last zany twist from such sequences as playing a swing version of chopsticks, dressing as charwomen to break into the Y. W. C. A. To adept Song Pluggers Alice Faye and Tony Martin, Mack Gordon & Harry Revel have supplied a tiptop score of which the most singable...
