...countdown had begun. On the roof of a building near the launching sites, 50 newsmen trained eyes and cameras on Jupiter-C, only a mile and a half away. Nerves tingled as each heart-leaping minute of the countdown squawked over an intercom box. At 9:42 a mournful warning horn sounded from the launching area. Two red warning lights blinked steadily. The white rocket fumed and smoked, growing whiter and colder under the pebbled casing of ice caused by the subfreezing liquid oxygen. The service structure moved away on its tracks...

...flashed a pickup for Chuck and Caril, and for Starkweather's prize possession, a souped-up 1949 Ford. The message went out too late. Four hours earlier the couple, in blue jeans and jackets, drove into a service station on Highway 77, bought 45? worth of gas, a box of .410 shotgun shells and two boxes of .225. They sped on toward the farming hamlet of Bennet (pop. 350), 16 miles southeast of Lincoln. Starkweather needed a hideout, knew that two miles outside Bennet nestled the neat white farmhouse of 70-year-old August Meyer, an old family friend...

...play-an immediate box-office hit -has a self-contained narrative, a clear beginning and end. It is the explicit record of a man's physical self-conquest, literally step by step, which is in turn the measure of his inner toughening, adjustment and growth. Of F.D.R.'s relation to politics and public affairs, there is no more than the sounds of tuning up; in his relations with his family, he seems a little too conventionally gay, rationally irritable and distantly intimate. Sunrise at Campobello is most successfully concerned with F.D.R.'s relations to himself. It thus...

Dore Schary, 53, oldtime writer, big-wheel cinemagnate and devout Democrat, has long mingled his art with politics. In 1956, after a slump at the box office and a series of money-losing movies (The Swan, Somebody Up There Likes Me), he was fired as production chief of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, suspected that the firing was due in part to his support of Adlai Stevenson. Schary had stumped for Stevenson in the 1952 and 1956 campaigns, also produced the doctrinaire film, Pursuit of Happiness, for the Democratic National Committee...

...Body Beautiful (music and lyrics by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick; book by Joseph Stein and Will Glickman) is wholeheartedly, though in spots enjoyably, mediocre. Treating of the fight world, it drapes the plot round a rich, handsome Dartmouth graduate who wants to box his way to glory and falls in love with a girl who disapproves. Their squabbles over the ring, and his adventures in it, are about the dullest part of the show. It bounces to life in Jack Warden's amusing, likable performance as a fight manager, most notably when he goes fully clothed, on business...
