...lanky Monroe County boy named Estes Kefauver. Estes was a lumber handler, hoisting it into freight cars. Ray was a grader, checking lumber as it was piled in the cars. Says Tennessee's Senator Kefauver: "I was always kind of envious of him. He could stay in the boxcar where it was cool; I had to stay...
...rear of the aerial train, Flying Boxcar No. 29 dropped out of formation in the turbulent air-probably because of engine or propeller trouble. It nosed down and glided full into a "stick" of floating paratroopers from the plane ahead. Dented and damaged by the impact of their bodies, it slid down in a long death dive and vanished behind the pine tops. A pillar of smoke rose in the distance. Ten dead men came down from the sky. Some, whose chutes had been chopped up, plummeted, some floated as casually as the living. Living jumpers from Plane...
FAIRCHILD Engine & Airplane Corp. is building a prototype of a new lightweight earth mover, the Transair Tractor, which it hopes will revolutionize military and civilian construction equipment. Only 22½ ft. long, it weighs 13,000 Ibs. and can be carried in a C-119 Flying Boxcar. On the job, it can take on up to 40,000 Ibs. of dirt or water as ballast, do the job of a bulldozer, power shovel, or air compressor capable of running 12 pneumatic jackhammers. Fairchild, which will deliver the first model to the Army next December, hopes eventually to cut the price...
...aircraft cancellations came after Senator Styles Bridges' hearings had brought out that K-F needed $1.3 million to build a Boxcar that Fairchild itself is building for only $260,000 each (TIME, June 15). The Air Force denied that this caused the cancellation, but nobody believed it. The Air Force, fighting to restore some of the cuts in its 1954 budget, obviously wanted to drop an operation criticized as wasteful. Henry Kaiser and Edgar had done their best, before the hearings broke up. to acquit K-F of this charge. In a 22-page prepared statement...
When New Hampshire's sharp-tongued Senator Styles Bridges charged last November that the Air Force was paying Kaiser-Frazer $1.2 million apiece for the same C-119 Flying Boxcar that Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corp. made for $260,000, K-F's President Edgar Kaiser cried foul. He took newspaper ads in ten cities to answer the charges of K-F's inefficiency (TIME, Nov. 24) and invited a congressional investigation. Last week...
