In 1899-at the age of eight-redheaded Carl Spatz (later changed to Spaatz) was the youngest linotype operator in Pennsylvania. He operated the machine in the Boyertown, Pa. print shop where his Pennsylvania Dutch father and grandfather published the Berks County Democrat.
