...serious obstruction in sight. Puffing comfortably on a large pale cigar, he admitted a group of correspondents to his office last week and delivered himself of a few random observations. As everyone knows, smiling General von Schleicher has a high opinion of Republican ex-Chancellor Brüning's character and ability. Privately he has no such regard for his present political ally, bristle-lipped Adolf Hitler. Subtly as the great Metternich whom he so much admires, General von Schleicher expressed these ideas last week...

...Germany's former error was a false optimism. . . . Dr. Brüning is an ascetic, he always told the people the truth, but after a while the masses always become unreceptive to asceticism, particularly when they are called upon to make sacrifices without understanding why. They will submit to the greatest privations, I think, if only one talks the language that touches the heart...

Return of Brüning. There is one way that the Nationalist groups can have a parliamentary majority without dissolving the Reichstag: they might force the Junker Cabinet to declare the Communist Party outlaw, thus throwing out 89 Deputies and giving the Right Wing a working majority of 36. The morning after election day Nazi papers loudly demanded just such a move. It seemed unlikely that the "Cabinet of Monocles" would comply. In Die Walkure there were not the usual nine but 17 Valkyries galloping over the mountain. Brünnehilde's eight new sisters were given made-up. Wagnerian-sounding names like "Ritthelle." "Kampfsiege," "Trautschilde." There were real gas flames, 10 to 40 ft. high, for the Magic Fire scene. In Die Walküre sang Soprano Elsa Alsen, Basso Fred Patton. Tenor Georg Fassnacht Jr. from...

...Brüning fall from grace was broadly attributed to two factors: 1) the large gain of the Hitlerites in the recent election; 2) the action of the Brüning Cabinet in forcibly dissolving the Hitler storm troops, an act which the patriotic generals could not stomach and which eventually turned the President against Dr. Brüning. Proclaiming: "Our hour has come!" the Fascists announced they would support no Cabinet in which they did not have a majority. Without the Hitlerites no Cabinet seemed possible unless a new Reichstag was elected. Seemingly these developments foreshadowed a new Government...
