...movie's other saving grace is that Becky has absolutely hideous taste. Whether this is intentional, only costume designer Patricia Field (Sex and the City) knows for sure. What Carrie Bradshaw might have pulled off, Becky sinks under. Colors, plaids, accessories, boots - it's all garish; she doesn't wear or carry a single appealing object for the length of the movie. This is oddly comforting. We're officially 14 months into this recession, and many of us are not just tightening belts but swearing off shopping altogether. Confessions, perhaps inadvertently, assures us that being deprived of Gucci boots...
Could an appeal for emergency aid for Gazans living in extreme hardship following the Israeli military campaign be construed as an attack on that campaign? Thompson and his lieutenants fear so. Ben Bradshaw, a former BBC newsman who is now Health Minister, called the reasoning "completely feeble." MPs are queuing to sign a motion brought by Richard Burden, a Labour MP, expressing "astonishment" at the rebuff. "It completely baffles me," Burden said. "Do I think impartiality is important? Of course I do. But to be honest, what the BBC is doing is undermining its reputation for impartiality rather than bolstering...
...like a career year for Bushnell, what with the success of the Sex and the City movie and the success--or, at any rate, the renewal--of her NBC series Lipstick Jungle. She also just announced a deal to write young-adult novels about the teen years of Carrie Bradshaw. One Fifth Avenue should round all that out nicely. It's certainly a page turner of practically Germanic efficiency. But it also reminds us of a weird truth about its author, which is that Bushnell on the page is a far darker, more interesting creature than Bushnell on the screen...
These are bleak truths that Carrie Bradshaw could never grasp. Her life in Sex and the City is a fairy-tale fever dream of shopping and dating from which she will never awaken, no matter how many princes kiss her. She wouldn't last an hour at One Fifth Avenue. Bushnell knows this. She even slyly hints at it: Lola, the gold digger, "had watched every single episode of Sex and the City at least, as she claimed, 'a hundred times.'" Lola arrives in Manhattan expecting--nay, demanding--a West Village apartment and a Mr. Big. Suffice...
...really a sexy show. There's something studied and businesslike about Belle's bed play, and her sessions with pasty-buttocked businessmen are usually more funny than arousing. It's not a profound show either, though Hannah occasionally ruminates on her sex-vs.-love life à la Carrie Bradshaw in satc: "Sex is really a numbers game. Group sex is complicated, but that's mechanics. For me the hardest numbers have always been one plus one." (One is the loneliest but by no means the highest number that she'll ever...
